What is Chabad Waterloo?
It is huge events - like our welcome back BBQ and holiday events, which gather hundreds of people - and small events, like Torah classes and one-on-one counselling. It is high-profile - like our public menorah lightings, covered in the media and attended by Jews and non-Jews - and low-profile - like the work we do that you will never read about. It means building relationships with other leaders in our community and advocating for our community, and reaching out to every single Jew, regardless of their level of observance, socioeconomic status, or anything else. It is ALL about shining a powerful light amidst some awful darkness.
How does a Matching Campaign work?
Running an operation like ours requires a major investment of time, energy, and capital. While our Rabbi and Rebbetzin work tirelessly to ensure that no Jew is left behind, the day-to-day expenses of operating a Chabad center can be daunting. Rather than charging membership fees or exorbitant event prices, which could leave some people out, we rely on the generosity of the community that we serve. To that end, a few generous donors have come forward with a proposal to help Chabad thrive this year. They will collectively donate $125,000 to our center, provided that it is matched by an equal donation from you, our community. For the next 48 hours only, your dollar will have TWO TIMES the impact!
How can I help? And what does this have to do with chutzpah?
You can be a partner in everything we do to benefit the students and residents of the Waterloo Region by contributing to our campaign during this High Holidays season, and by spreading the word to anyone else who would be interested in supporting this community. Chutzpah means insolence, nerve and blatant disrespect. It's mostly a bad thing; except for when it's transformed into a powerful force for good. E.g. it takes chutzpah to believe that Chabad can succeed in KW; yet here we are. It takes chutzpah to put up large menorahs in every municipality in the area - yet here we are. Positive chutzpah is entrepreneurial, bold, and joyful, all in the service of our community and the greater good. It takes even more chutzpah to give a larger donation than you originally considered - but you won't regret doing just that :).
