Dear Friend,

I hope this finds you well.

There are some Jews who find the following joke very funny:

Moses is up on Mount Sinai and the Almighty is conveying the text of the Torah to him. They come to “Do not cook a kid in its mother’s milk”, and Moses looks up and says, “By this I assume you mean we should not eat meat and milk dishes at the same time.”

“No,” replies the Almighty, “I simply said, ‘Do not cook a kid in its mother’s milk.’”

“OK,” says Moses, “So you mean we should have separate dishes for meat and milk."

“No,” says the Master of the Universe, “I simply said, ‘Do not cook a kid in its mother’s milk.’”

“Fine,” says Moses, “So you mean we should wait six hours after meat before we can eat milk?”

“Alright, Moses,” says the Holy One, “have it your way.”

All jokes aside - how does it all really work? How do we get from "do not cook a kid in its mother's milk" to the multitude of kosher laws in Judaism? And how is it valid? This is the focus of our new adult education course, Judaism Decoded. I believe that it is vital for you to explore and understand how the entirety of Judaism as you know and practice it would simply not exist were it not for the Oral Torah, which explains and elaborates on the terse Written Torah. Please join me in an exhilarating, intellectual and open minded journey as we tackle this fundamental topic.

The course launches on Monday, May 4th at 7:30 PM and goes until 9:00 PM at Chabad. Refreshments are served at 7:15, and we begin and conclude extremely promptly. The cost is $40 per person - but if finances are tight, that should not stop you from attending. Kindly reply to this email to let me know that you're coming.

Our next community Shabbat dinner is happening on May 15th at Chabad. featuring four courses of gourmet dining and l'chaims, excellent company and conversation, and heaping portions of food for the soul - there's nothing like it! $15 per person and $40 per family - click here to RSVP today! We look forward to sharing Shabbat with you.

Featured DVD of the week:  73x96_ShavuotCount_Thumb.jpgCountdown to Shavuot: It's Shavuot! Avigail and Brosh want to stay up all night just like the grown-ups. Will they be able to do it? They will certainly try with a little help from a dancing cow! Take a trip to the Israeli desert, see how a mezuzah is crafted, and learn the story of Moses at Mt. Sinai along with familiar Sesame Street friends. With guest star Ben Stiller.

Light Shabbat candles today at 8:06 PM; Shabbat sadly concludes tomorrow at 9:13 PM.

Kitchener-Waterloo
Walk for Israel 2015
There is no better way to celebrate the impending arrival of summer than to walk for Israel with family and friends. At the same time, you'll raise money for children at risk in Israel, many of whom don't have strong family support in their own lives.
On June 14th at 10:30 A.M., a 5-kilometre walk will take us through beautiful Victoria Park. Afterwards, we'll enjoy lunch courtesy of the Waterloo Region Jewish Community Council.

In the past three years, through the Walk for Israel, the Kitchener-Waterloo Jewish community has raised over $30,000 for Youth Futures, a program in Kiryat Shmona that mentors Israeli children who need direction in life. We continue to support this essential program because children are the future of Israel.

So come on down to Beth Jacob Synagogue - 161 Stirling St. South, Kitchener - on June 14th. We'll have some fun, meet up with friends and come together as a community for this special event.

Youth Futures provides community-based mentoring for at-risk pre-teens and adolescents in Israel. Trained mentors work as trusted guides to help students improve school performance, strengthen social integration, and inspire engagement with the community. Mentors also connect youth, families, and communities with the services and local resources to help them overcome barriers to success.
Don't have the time to participate? We would still greatly appreciate your support.
